If you wish, you can follow the central plot from the gospel of John, chapters 11-12.

Although these events lead us to Easter,

this Broadway-scale musical, based on the story of Lazarus, is suitable for worship the entire year.

Instrumental accompaniment tracks are available.

Introducing the Characters

You are introduced to a "Three's Company" type dysfunctional family where an older brother and two sisters coexist in the same household.

Martha's Complaint

Martha makes an appeal for help

while Lazarus lounges and Mary sits at the feet of Jesus.

Luke 10:38-42

Speed of Life (Reprise)

At his birthday party, Lazarus is reunited with his old friend Judas,

who, with the rest of his old fraternity brothers (the disciples)

have made the visit to Bethany with Jesus.

When his lifestyle is questioned, Lazarus takes the opportunity to let everyone know he’s living to the beat of his own drum, just the way he likes!

And he sings it to the doctor’s own tune.

My Old Cloak

Lazarus literally goes dumpster-diving to retrieve his old cloak that Martha trashed and replaced with a new one, given as a special hand-made birthday gift.  To Martha’s angst, Lazarus would rather keep his old cloak.

Symbolic of Colossians 3:9-10, this is a central reoccurring theme in the development of Lazarus' character.

Are You Really There?

What began as a carefree and comic plot

suddenly takes a tragic turn.

Will You Know Me?

Jesus’ friendship with Lazarus is questioned by his disciples

while he intentionally lingers in Judea until Lazarus dies.  Seeking proof of his divinity, the disciples ask Jesus to reveal the Father.  Jesus responds,

"Have I been with you so long, and yet you do not know me?”

In A Moment

Lazarus dies without reconciling with Martha.

Die With Him Too!

The disciples, guided by Judas

who takes an increasingly dominate lead in his criticism of Jesus,

weigh the dangerous political forces

that have risen against them.

What My Power Can Do

Jesus is met by Martha at the family tomb in Bethany.

In spite of Jesus' claim to have power over Death,

Martha is bitter and disconsolate.

Believe!

Jesus reveals that Lazarus’ death,

planned from the beginning of time,

was designed so that those who see this miracle

(and those who have not seen)

might believe in him.

End of Act One.

When the Temperature Drops

Growing tiresome of Jesus’ teaching of self-denial, Judas elevates his demands that Jesus use his power to free his people from Roman tyranny.

If Jesus claims to be God, why doesn’t he do something

about the terror his own people are experiencing.

If God is in control, why does he allow bad things to happen to good people?

At Your Feet

Mary offers a gift of worship to Jesus.

Judas despises the worthiness

of such a costly offering that could be used to fund a revolt.

Crucify Him!

Judas, impatient with debate and worship,

takes matters into his own hands

and through a plan he devises with the Pharisees,

attempts to force God into an action

that will achieve Judas’ political ends.

No Different Than You!

Lazarus and Judas have a falling out when Lazarus refuses to engage

in his old friend's failed scheme to force Jesus' hand.

Lazarus accuses Judas of murder.

Knowing Lazarus' fickle past, Judas retaliates that Lazarus’ new-found profession will soon collapse with an equivalent betrayal of his faith.

How Will I Live Again?

Lazarus betrays his relationship to Jesus, just as Judas predicted,

when he is confronted by a shadowy impersonation of Death

who accuses him of being the wanted man

the authorities have now condemned.

Lazarus ponders the dark events that have led to this moment.

Was Jesus really Who he said he was?

Was Jesus’ brutal execution something God did not foresee?

And what of the promise of new life if Jesus is dead?

Mary's Testimony

Mary describes her amazing encounter at the tomb of Jesus.

Doubtful, the disciples discount her experience

with all the arguments the world presents against the Resurrection.

Believe (Reprise)

Having huddled in fear at Lazarus' house in Bethany,

all are startled as Jesus appears in their midst.

Lazarus, in shame, falls at the feet of Jesus in total surrender.

Once again, Jesus entreats him to believe.

I Surrender All - Finale

The pieces of the puzzle finally come together for Lazarus as he secures his faith in Jesus by nothing less than total surrender to the right to himself.

Romans 8:28 concludes his expression of this enduring reality.
